British League Premier Division – match 1

27 Aug British League Premier Division – match 1

Fusion TTC faced a very tough task in the first match of the new season in the British League Premier Division on Saturday 27th of August. This year the format of the league has changed from playing 4 matches in one weekend in a central venue to home and away matches, which means that each team will be playing 6 matches in their own venue in front of a crowd of home supporters.

Starting off the season, the schedule pitted Fusion against title favourites Ormesby Table Tennis Club in their Middlesbrough home venue. Ormesby TTC relied on the service of England No5 Daniel Reed and No8 Darius Knight, former Polish international Filip Szymanski and Welsh international Michael Marsden, while Fusion was without their, nominally, two best players Kazeem Adeleke and Lorestas Trumpauskas. The Fusion team on the day consisted of Adeoye Adewale, Niall Cameron, Emran Hussain and 13 year-old Joseph Hee, the youngest player in this year’s Premier Division and a very exciting talent.

Although former Scottish international Niall Cameron gave Commonwealth Games Silver medalist Daniel Reed a good fight in the first match he was eventually outplayed in 4 games. The next two matches, Filip Szymanski against Ade Adewale and Darius Knight against the young defender Joseph Hee, also went the way of Ormesby. Emran Hussain fought back for Fusion with a 5 games win against Michael Marsden. This was as good as it was going to get for Fusion who fought hard and played some great table tennis against what is probably the strongest team of the division. Each Fusion player secured at least one end on the day but the match finished 7:1 to Ormesby. The next match for Fusion, and probably a much better chance to secure some points, will be another away fixture at BATTS of Harlow on the 24th of September. The first British League match at Fusion’s home in South Bermondsey is scheduled for the 5th of November against Halton. Everybody is welcome to watch and enjoy the table tennis skills, the atmosphere, the social interactions and rub shoulders with the top players.
