14 Apr Fusion lose narrowly to Ormesby
In an exciting match on Saturday the 8th of April, Fusion lost out narrowly to a very strong Ormesby side, containing Polish international Filip Szymanski, England internationals Danny Reed and Darius Knight, and Liam McTiernan. Fusion fielded Kazeem Adeleke, Lorestas Trumpauskas, Emran Hussain and youngster Joseph Hee. Looking solely at the respective player rankings, Ormesby was expected to win this match but Fusion wasn’t going to make it easy for them.
In the first match, Kazeem, revitalised after his new fitness program, was up against Danny Reed and he played some inspired table tennis indeed to win in four games. Filip equalised for Ormesby with a straight sets win against Lorestas. Emran made it 2:1 to Fusion with a hard fought win against Liam McTiernan and Fusion even looked to go 3:1 ahead when 14 year old defender Joseph Hee lead former England international Darius Knight 6:1 in the fifth game. Experience told, however, and with a fantastic display of serves and rapid forehand attack, Darius came back to win 11:9 and equalise the overall score again.
Kazeem then had the chance to give Fusion the lead again in a close and exciting match against Filip. Unfortunately, he fell short in the fifth game. At 7:7 in the fifth it was anyone’s game but Kazeem could not withstand the pressure, losing 11:7 in the final game. Emran, who started like a steam train, finally lost out in a close contest against Danny Reed, as did Lorestas against Darius, so that Joseph’s convincing straight sets win against Liam McTiernan was not enough to earn a point for Fusion. Fusion gave Ormesby a scare and should be proud of their efforts. The match ended 5:3 to Ormesby.
This result leaves Fusion in 4th place, one point behind third-placed BATTS, who are coming to South Bermondsey next Saturday, the 15th of April; a match that is going to go a long way towards determining who’ll come third in the division.
